a fund set up by the British parliament in 1980 for buying and preserving buildings, works of art and other objects that are seen as part of Britain's history. The money for the fund comes mainly from the government and from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is called a Memorial Fund because it is intended to honour the memory of people who have died for Britain.
