(1672-1729) an Irish writer of plays and essays. He moved to London as a young man, and wrote several comedy plays. They contained more social and moral comments than the popular Restoration comedies, and were not very successful. He is best remembered for starting two magazines, The Tatler and The Spectator, for which he wrote essays about literature and moral questions.
