(1882-1940) an English artist. He is well known for his sculptures, especially his bas-reliefs(= sculptures in which the design sticks out only slightly from its background) such as his Stations of the Cross (1914-18) in Westminster Cathedral and the carving of Prospero and Ariel on the front of the BBC building. He was a calligrapher(= someone who practises beautiful handwriting that you do with a special pen or brush) and also created several new typefaces(= styles for printing letters in books, magazines, etc.), of which the most famous is Gill Sans.
