Covenanter

noun
1
any of a group of 17th-century Scottish Presbyterians who supported two covenants (1638 and 1643). These were formal statements defending Presbyterianism and protesting against the religious policies of Charles I, who wanted to set up a Scottish Church with bishops, like the Church of England. The Covenanters supported Parliament in the English Civil War.
